The Maison Ravier
François Auguste Ravier (1814-1895) Biography
François
Auguste Ravier was born in Lyon in may, the 4th,
1814. His parents, Claude Ravier and Françoise
Viennois kept a sweet shop.
In 1834, Ravier left Lyon to Paris to continue his studies
to become lawyer, according to the wishes' parents. He was
a successfull candidate in exam a year later. During his stay,
he visited the Louvre Museum and drew a lot of sights of Paris.
In this years, the Barbizon'school is already fast expanding.
Ravier would like to be a painter, against his parents' opinion.
But Nicolas Victor Fonville, famous painter,
wrote to his parents to convince them to let their son abandon
is lawyer career for a career of a painter of lanscape. |

Indeed, he spent one year in Theodore Caruelle
d'Aligny & Jules Coignet studios. Then he went
to Auvergne where he encountered Camille Corot
in Royat town in 1839. As most of painters, Ravier went
to Italy. He returned in 1843-44, 1846 & last in 1847.
1845 : he went acroos the Dauphiné, Velay & Forez
country to Crémieu, a mediaeval city nearest Morestel.
There, in 1852 he spent his time with his friends : C.Corot,
François Daubigny for the most famous. Together,
they painted Optevoz valley.
1854 : Ravier lived in Cremieu with his wife Antoinette
Dessaigne which he married with a year before. They have
a girl and 4 sons. In this town, he lived quietly, and lot
of painters came to visit him, from 1864 to 1867.

In 1867, he bought a beautiful house on the top of Morestel
town where he spent the rest of his life, until
1895.
Unfortunately, in 1884 he had an eye disease which contraint
doctors to take it off. His sight deteriorate little by
little. He continued to paint, encouraged by his friends
but he died completely blind at 81 years old in june, the
26th, 1895. His grave is in Morestel cemetery.
